Wood Window Finishing | RAL, NCS, Wood Stain, Two-Tone

The finish of wooden windows changes the face of a house more than usually anticipated. At SM Wood Prodcom, we have been processing laminated wood in Floresti, Cluj, since 1997, and we have realised over time that the choice of colour and finish type often makes the difference between an ‘ok’ house and a notable one. The finishing process is carried out entirely in our factory – we do not outsource this stage, as we want to control quality from the primer to the final coat of lacquer.

Painting is done professionally using spray guns with Kremlin/Airmix equipment – an application technology that ensures uniform coverage on all profiles, including corners, millings, and ornaments. Exactly where brush-applied paint leaves visible marks.

Stain finish — when the wood speaks for itself

If you’ve chosen oak or meranti windows, it would almost be a waste to cover them with opaque paint. The wood stain finish keeps the wood’s natural grain visible—its texture, hues, and the specific character of the wood species. And that doesn’t mean the wood is unprotected: oil-based wood stain penetrates deep into the fibres and creates a much more effective deep protection than a surface varnish.

Yes. Repainting installed windows is possible and is done on-site. The process involves cleaning the existing surface, applying wood sealer to worn areas, and applying new coats of varnish or paint. We recommend this treatment every 8–10 years to maintain optimal protection.

Yes. We offer a minimum 5-year warranty on the finish under normal use and maintenance conditions. The warranty covers adhesion defects, peeling, or cracking caused by the materials used—not normal wear and tear caused by prolonged exposure without maintenance.

How Many Colours are Available – A Precise Answer

The RAL Classic palette contains 215 colours. RAL Design System+ adds 1,825 additional shades. The NCS (Natural Colour System) palette – used extensively in architecture – covers approximately 1,950 tones. Combined, we are talking about over 2,000 unique options. Basically, if you have a colour in mind, its equivalent exists in one of these palettes.

You don’t need to know the exact code. You can come with a photograph, a plaster sample, or a fragment from an architecture magazine, and we will identify the right variant together. We have samples in our workshop and can perform tests on wood samples if the project requires it.

Why Not All Lacquers are the Same – and Why It Matters to You

There are wood lacquers on the market that look good for the first two years and then crack or peel. The invariable cause: low vapour permeability. A rigid lacquer does not allow the wood to move naturally and, over time, fails under the seasonal movements of the material.

The coatings we use have three essential properties: high vapour permeability (the wood breathes), elasticity (follows the wood’s movement without cracking), and UV protection (does not degrade under solar exposure). These are the requirements we impose on our suppliers for every batch of material – not just marketing promises.

Dual Colour Finish – Why So Many Clients Choose It

The dual colour option has exploded in popularity in the last 5-6 years. The reason is logical: many clients want a sober and modern exterior for the house – anthracite or dark grey. However, the same dark tone inside would make the rooms feel gloomier. Dual colour elegantly resolves this tension: the colour that matches the facade on the outside, and white or beige on the inside to brighten the room.

Technically, a dual colour finish is achieved by applying two separate systems of lacquer or paint, with precise delimitation in the transition area. It is not a simple operation, but at SM Wood Prodcom, it has been a standard procedure for years.

A translucent wood stain keeps the natural grain of the wood visible – the texture, shades, and specific character of the species. And it doesn’t mean the wood is unprotected: oil-based stains penetrate deep into the fibres and create deep-seated protection that is much more effective than a surface lacquer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wooden Window Finishes

Can a wooden window be repainted without dismantling it?

Yes. Repainting installed windows is possible and is done on-site. The process involves cleaning the existing surface, applying primer to worn areas, and applying new coats of lacquer or paint. We recommend this intervention every 8-10 years to maintain optimal protection.

Is the finish guarantee included in the price of the window?

Yes. We offer a minimum 5-year guarantee on the finish under normal conditions of use and maintenance. The guarantee covers adhesion defects, peeling, or cracking caused by the materials used – not normal wear and tear caused by prolonged exposure without maintenance.

Q3: What is the matte effect finish and why is it so popular?

The matte finish has a reflection degree of less than 10%, offering a contemporary “velvety” look that doesn’t reflect solar light harshly. It is preferred in modern architecture as it masks minor facade imperfections better and gives windows a discreet, elegant presence, while also being highly fingerprint-resistant.

Q4: Are water-based lacquers as durable as solvent-based ones?

Currently, professional water-based lacquers are superior to solvent-based ones for exterior use. They have much higher elasticity, allowing the wood to expand and contract without the paint film cracking, and they are far more environmentally friendly and healthier for occupants, having no toxic emissions (low VOC).

We finish SM Wood windows and doors exclusively using the **Remmers Induline** system — a professional water-based solution, free of solvents, ensuring long-term protection. The system is applied in 3–4 layers (depending on the wood species): impregnation, isolation, intermediate, and topcoat stages. The schedule varies by species — oak requires an anti-tannin layer, larch requires a resin isolation layer.

The system delivers documented ecological parameters for each product:

**The standard finish** (opaque RAL/NCS or translucent): hail resistance, freeze-thaw elasticity, no gasket blocking.

**On request** — for projects targeting maximum ecological standards — we use the **Induline eco system** — IW-130 impregnant (VOC below 20 g/l) followed by a transparent topcoat. Suitable for sensitive environments (children’s rooms, hospitals) or green-certified buildings.

The finish guarantee **can be up to 10 years** with documented periodic maintenance (cleaning and topcoat inspection 1–2 times per year).
