What these figures mean for joinery: Density of 680 kg/m³ makes ash sashes heavy – hardware must be sized accordingly. Janka 6,580 N is the highest in our standard range, outperforming oak for thresholds and sills. Radial shrinkage of 5.7% is the highest in the range – ash moves more with humidity, so lamination and finishing are essential. λ ~0.16 W/m·K places it between softwoods and oak, better than oak (0.18 W/m·K) but weaker than softwoods and meranti (0.13 W/m·K). Natural Durability Class 4 means unprotected ash degrades rapidly outdoors; the industrial finish is not optional.

Ash combines extreme hardness with a clean, straight grain – but the finish is essential.

λ ~0.16 W/m·K – better than oak (0.18), weaker than softwoods (0.11‑0.13) and meranti (0.13 W/m·K). The Uf of the ash frame is calculated on request. For strict nZEB targets, softwoods remain thermally superior.

6,580 N Janka – exceeds any other species in our standard range. For high‑traffic thresholds, frequently used sills and steps, ash offers the highest mechanical wear resistance available in European wood.

Ash takes translucent stains beautifully, with a clean creamy‑white to light brown tone. Dark heartwood stripes (“Olive Ash”) add character. Under opaque RAL, it is identical to any other wood.

Ash’s low natural durability must be actively managed, but with correct finishing it lasts decades.

Class 4 – poorly durable without treatment, identical to spruce. Without protection, ash degrades quickly outdoors. The Remmers industrial finish transforms this vulnerability into a controlled, durable surface.

With at least 4 layers of Remmers factory finish: cleaning and reapplying a protective coat at 10 years, without full stripping. Ash is durability Class 4, so its service life is set by the finish and by keeping to the maintenance schedule rather than by the wood itself.

Ash responds well to steam bending – the straight, regular grain allows controlled deformation without cracking. This is an advantage for curved profiles or decorative elements, though not typically required for standard windows.

Advantages

  • Janka 6,580 N – the hardest European wood in our range
  • Straight, regular grain – clean appearance under stains, precise machining
  • λ ~0.16 W/m·K – slightly better thermally than oak
  • Density 680 kg/m³ – high mass, good acoustic properties through the profile
  • Responds excellently to steam bending – useful for curved joinery elements

Disadvantages

  • Natural Durability Class 4 – poorly durable without finish, identical to spruce
  • Radial shrinkage 5.7% – the highest in our range, more sensitive to humidity
  • Not in standard stock – made to order with extended lead times
  • λ ~0.16 W/m·K – inferior to softwoods and meranti for thermal calculations
  • Higher cost compared to softwoods; longer lead time than oak

Key Details

  • Not in standard stock – made to order with an extended lead time compared to softwoods or oak.
  • Available on IV78, IV92, D78, D92 series.
  • Ash is not listed in CITES or the IUCN Red List. FSC availability is discussed on request. FSC on request, discussed at quotation.
  • Lead times and pricing confirmed at the quoting stage.

Price varies with profile, opening size and configuration – request a free quotation. For B2B projects, Ud, Uf, Ug and PHPP data are provided on request.

  • Lead time is critical – ash is not in stock; delivery is longer than for standard species.
  • The project has strict thermal requirements – softwoods or meranti are superior.
  • Budget is a priority – spruce or Nordic pine covers nZEB at a much lower cost.
  • The client cannot commit to a 10‑year maintenance cycle – Class 4 durability makes this indispensable.
  • Thresholds or sills with extremely intense traffic - Janka 6,580 N exceeds any other species in the standard range
  • Projects where creamy-white straight grain under stains is a specific aesthetic requirement
  • Architects or designers who specify ash for consistency with other interior elements (flooring, furniture, stairs)
  • The client accepts an extended lead time and higher cost compared to stock alternatives

Hardness and natural durability are independent properties. Janka hardness measures resistance to mechanical penetration – how hard it is to scratch or dent. Natural durability measures resistance to decay fungi and bacteria. Ash is extremely hard mechanically but very sensitive biologically. The industrial finish solves the biological problem; the hardness remains an advantage.

Yes. Radial shrinkage of 5.7% compared to 4.7% for oak means ash moves more with humidity variations. Lamination in 3+ layers compensates, but ash is less dimensionally stable than oak or meranti. Regular maintenance of the finish is essential to control this tendency.

λ ~0.16 W/m·K – better than oak (0.18), weaker than softwoods (0.11‑0.13). Exact Uf/Uw values for ash are calculated on request for the specific configuration – profile, size, glazing.

Longer lead time compared to stock species (spruce, Nordic pine, meranti, oak). The exact duration is discussed at the time of quotation based on current availability.
